If you’re applying for a work visa, migration, or a job abroad, IELTS General is the exam you need — not IELTS Academic, which universities ask for. The two tests share the same Listening and Speaking sections but differ in Reading and Writing: General Training uses everyday texts like notices and workplace letters instead of academic passages. Our course at JAK is built entirely around this format, so every mock test and writing task you practice matches what you’ll actually see on exam day.
Listening, Reading, and Writing run back-to-back in about 2 hours 45 minutes, with Speaking done separately as a short face-to-face interview. Most students underestimate how tiring the back-to-back format is — that’s why our 6 full-length mock tests are timed exactly like the real exam, so the pacing feels familiar instead of overwhelming when it counts.
You can sit IELTS on paper or on a computer — same content, different format. Listening, Reading, and Writing happen in one sitting; Speaking is a live conversation with an examiner. We train students for both formats and specifically walk through how to manage time on computer-based tests, since the screen navigation trips up more people than the content itself.
It depends on where you’re starting from — someone at a strong intermediate level might need 4 weeks; someone rebuilding grammar and vocabulary from scratch usually needs longer. Our course runs on a 4-week structured plan built around your current level, so instead of an open-ended “study until you feel ready” approach, you have a fixed timeline with a personalized study plan and 6 full mock tests built in to track exactly where you stand each week.
Most students plateau below 7 for the same three reasons: weak time management in Reading, thin vocabulary range in Writing Task 2, and under-practiced Speaking fluency under pressure.
